Capone - 2020
Capone is a biographical film released in 2020, written, directed, and edited by Josh Trank, starring Tom Hardy as Al Capone, the infamous gangster. The movie depicts Capone's life after he served an 11-year sentence at the United States Penitentiary, suffering from neurosyphilis and dementia in his retirement home in Palm Island, Florida. Alongside Hardy, the film stars Linda Cardellini, Jack Lowden, Noel Fisher, Kyle MacLachlan, and Matt Dillon.
Although the movie was first announced in October 2016, production did not begin until March 2018, lasting through May in Louisiana. Originally intended to have a theatrical release, it was released on video on demand by Vertical Entertainment on May 12, 2020. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with Hardy's performance receiving a polarized response.
The plot follows Capone, who was once the most feared bootlegger of Chicago, as he tries to cope with his deteriorating mental state after his release from prison. Under federal watch, Capone is suspected of faking his insanity and is forced to sell his belongings to pay off his debts. Capone has hallucinations and loses control of his motor functions, while also remembering that he hid $10 million but cannot remember where.
As his condition worsens, Capone has visions of the violent acts he had committed and regrets his past. His wife, Mae, becomes increasingly concerned about his deteriorating health and orders Capone's bodyguards to keep everyone away from him. In the end, Capone dies in January 1947 at the age of 48, having alienated everyone around him. His family changes their name, and the money he allegedly hid away has never been recovered.
Overall, Capone is a poignant and unsettling portrayal of a once-powerful man's tragic decline, brought to life by Tom Hardy's captivating performance.
